Preheat the oven to 170°C (150°C fan bake). Line 3 baking trays with baking paper.
Beat the butter and sugars until pale. Add the vanilla and egg, and beat well. Sift in the flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda, then add the rolled oats. Fold until almost incorporated, and then mix in the chocolate and cherries.
Roll into balls (about 2 teaspoons in size) and place on the baking trays 2–3cm apart.
Bake for 8–10 minutes until golden. Cool on a wire rack.
