Tracking our impact from bean to bar

We’ve just completed our baseline year of carbon measurement. Find out how we’re tracking.

At Whittaker’s, we’re all about making good honest chocolate, and this includes sharing updates on our journey to do better for the environment.

We recently took a significant step on this journey, to better understand our carbon emissions. We’ve now completed our baseline carbon footprint and are proud to share that as part of this journey, we have been granted Carbon Conscious Certification by Ekos.

The results showed that per 250g equivalent of chocolate, we produced 2.1kg of carbon emissions.

This has given us a baseline that we can track our progress against annually. This result was based on measuring three different areas of our business. To ensure we had done this correctly, we had our measure independently audited and certified.

Scope 1: direct emissions from owned or controlled sources such as our chocolate factory in Porirua and company vehicles

Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased electricity

Scope 3: all other indirect emissions such as emissions from our ingredient suppliers, logistics and packaging

We acknowledge that we are just at the start of our journey when it comes to reducing our emissions, but we are pleased to share that we have already taken some practical steps including:

Measuring our carbon footprint is part of our wider sustainability efforts. These include implementing a company-wide waste reduction programme, which achieved 80.74% recyclable packaging by weight as of June 2025, and making significant progress on our ethical sourcing – all of our cocoa beans are sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. We also achieved 100% of cocoa beans traceable from farm to factory ahead of our 2025 target, including geo-mapping the 2,400+ farms we currently source from in Ghana.

We look forward to keeping you updated along the way. If you have any questions about our carbon reduction journey, please get in touch!
